Hi Everyone.

I'm building a mini itx build that is almost the same size as a Xbox 360 and has it's own 300 watt PSU but i can't upgrade the PSU due to the fact it is custom built for the case.

Specs

Processor - AMD Athlon 5350 (Max 40 Watts - info from Here)
Motherboard - MSI AM1i (Max 35 Watts - Info from Here)
RAM = 2x Kingston HYPERX 4gb (3.48 Watts per stick - info from Here)
Hard Drive - 2.5 WD Black 500GB 7200rpm (7 to 10 Watts info from Here)

And the Graphics Card i was thinking of getting is a

GPU - Palit GeForce® GT 640 2048MB DDR3 Low Profile (65 Watts - info from Here)

So that works out to been a output (156.96 Watts) and fans and Mini PCIe Wifi card so say it is about (200 Watts) i still have (100 Watts) to spare.

So do any of you think it will be safe

thanks

Solution

Since the power efficiency comparison in the motherboard article already includes the CPU, RAM and a HDD/SSD, you are effectively counting all those components twice. The whole base platform (CPU, RAM, MoBo and one HDD/SSD) is ~40W.

If you want some decent 3D performance out of a sub-75W GPU, get a GTX750/750Ti, it will be more than twice as fast as the 640 for about the same power.

Hi - It should be OK, but need the brand/model of the PSU for a definative answer.
