Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO: best for its price?

Hi,
Last week, I replaced the stock cooler for my AMD FX-8350 with an Arctic Alpine 64 pro. It's utter crap and my temperatures are way too high. Is the 212 EVO a lot better and will it keep my FX-8350 at a reasonable temperature.
Also, if you are to recommend another it cannot be more expensive: I've spent almost all my money! The EVO costs £25.

212 EVO is very good.. suggest you get a good thermal paste like the AS5 for best cooling..

since you stated you are low on cash, try exchanging the AA64 pro..

Remember, if you put the thermal paste in the wrong way, all coolers will perform their worst.

when applying the paste, it should be a like a small drop at the size of three rice grains at the middle of the processor.. make sure to wipe it off of the old paste and use a good surgical spirit to clean it..

I've reapplied it a couple of times correctly: I'm pretty sure the cooler simply isn't good enough.

The Alpine 64 Pro just doesn't have the surface area to cool your CPU, nothing you do to that cooler will fix that issue. FrostyTech does cooler reviews and they show the Alpine 64 Pro running 17.8C hotter than a Hyper 212 Evo(Hyper 212 Evo - 12.8C, AA64 Pro 30.6C) so swapping it out for the 212 Evo will result in a nice temperature drop for you

You should be able to get a TX3 for ~16, it'll drop you about 9C over the AA64Pro, about half as much as the 212 Evo would, but it might be best just to put the stock heatsink back on and wait a bit until you can get the Evo or one of the other Hyper 212 models goes on sale.

In that case, the Hyper 212 is amazing.. suggest you take a look at noctua nh d14.. pretty big and beefy body.. but worth it.. I used to have a CM x6.. it was super quiet.. and was working just beautifully..

The Noctua coolers really aren't worth it these days :/  Their primary benefit is having large fans that can be run slower and quieter, but with small tower coolers like the 212 series closing the gap to the massive ones they are losing ground quickly. The D14 is ~65 GBP while the 212 Evo is only ~25 GBP, but the D14 only gives you a 2C drop over the 212 Evo so its really not worth it.

Sarge. The Hyper 212 EVO is a good cooler. I have three. That being said I also have an 8320 and 8350 and the Hyper 212 EVO could not dissipate the heat when I did even a modest overclock. I also have a 6300 with only six cores and the Hyper 212 could not adequately dissipate the heat at 4.4 GHz. I would advise you to pony up just a little more for a mid range cooler with a 140mm fan.

Only a 2 Celsius drop at what? Idle? Sure as heck isn't at full load. There is no way a Hyper 212 can remotely keep an eight core processor cooled like a NH-D14. Try running Prime95 for an hour and test both. I have.

NH-D14. Worth every penny if you want to get the most out of your 8320/8350. Oh, that and a Sabertooth R2.

Didn't look at the chart i posted at all did you? That would be where i was getting that 2C number from and it is at 125W load using a copper pad of similar dimensions to an AMD CPU.

If you look at the frostytech charts the Hyper 212 Evo is ~0.11 C/W, the NH-D14 is ~0.09 C/W. If your case is 40C and you are pumping 200W into the heatsink because you OC'd you'd see the Hyper 212 Evo at 62C while the D14 is only 58C, still not a massive difference and swapping the Hyper 212 Evo to a push pull config should close that gap rather quickly.

There are lots of grumpy people out there insisting that a small tower just can do it, but all the benchmarks indicate that they can. As in all matters, anecdotal evidence is just an opinion not evidence

I just installed the EVO and my temps have gone from 80* on a burner to 51* max! :D
