Motherboard and GPU compatibility

My motherboard (H61m-p32/w8) only has 1 pci-express slot, and the graphics card I want to buy (hd 7870) requires 2. Is there any way to work around this or do I have to purchase a new motherboard?

Yes you are correct, the 7870 will fit on your mobo in the blue slot. No need to buy a new one. MSI actually kept the space open next to the PCIe x16 slot so your card won't actually block anything on the mobo. But as you noted, you will use two slots on the back of the case.

And that PSU will work fine for your build.

The GPU only uses 1 PCIe x16 slot but requires 2 PCIe 6 pin power connectors, so that will depend on your PSU.

If you mean like it will need 2 slots then you are wrong. It will simply take the space of two slots like suppose if there is another pci below your pci-e slot than that slot will be covered but will not be used. I hope you got my point. If you anything other than this please ask away.

The 7870 will only require one physical PCIe slot to plug into. But it will occupy the space above the slot next to it (regardless of what type of slot it is) and it will also occupy the opening through the back of the case of the slot its plugged into and the one next to it.

So the 7870 only has one pcie slot, so it will fit in my mobo, and 2 slots needed to fit into the back. Correct? I know for a fact I have dual slot case openings in the back. does this mean I wont have to upgrade motherboard too?
