Hi guys, a major problem with my newish build
It contains the following

Case: Inwin901
MB: ASUS Maximus VI Impact Z87 ITX
CPU: i7-4770k (not overclocked)
GPU: Asus GTX 770 2GB
RAM: Cosair Vengence Pro 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 1866
PSU: SuperFlower Leadex GOLD 650W Fully Modular "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply – Black
Hard drives: I have 2 x 500GB HD and 1 x 250 SSD
Intake Fan: Corsair AF120 Performance Edition 120mm
Cooler: Cosair H60i

OS: Dual boot with windows 8.1 and Ubuntu 14:04

Even on boot the bios shows a temp rising to 66C and using windows 8.1 just web browsing & using excel the temp can rise to 88deg! The MB temp is showing 28C and GPU is showing 36C

Ubuntu shows lower temps as less drain on the CPU and right now I am CPU is 51C, nothing running but Chrome.

I have checked the fans and all are installed correctly and air flow the correct way. The CPU is idling at 1%. CPU fan @ 2340RPM. The cooler is attached correctly, nothing loose, unless I made a mistake on the build.

Now I am aware that the case is a bit of a disaster for air flow, but temps that high? Its strange that its just becoming a problem now as a months ago I had no issue and was playing Crysis 3 on high settings

Any thoughts??

With those temps it could only point to the cooler you use, that the pump is malfunctioning or completely dead.
BTW, you plug the fan to the CPU_FAN header and water block pump to CPU_OPT.
That case has only...a single exhaust? no intakes whatsoever?

Fan has one 120mm intake but its obstructed by the long graphics card. Its hidden under the opening just behind the front. And for the exhaust you can use either a 92mm fan or externally mount a 120mm cooler Not ideal for airflow to say the least.
You might be on to something. The cooler pipes are hotter near the CPU than the radiator. Is there any way test to tell if the pump is dead?

I will check the connections and revert. Just so I am clear, when you say
"BTW, you plug the fan to the CPU_FAN header and water block pump to CPU_OPT"
The "water block pump" is inside the black box that sits directly ontop on the CPU, right?

Thanks for your response!

Yes, that is the waterblock. To check if the pump is working you can touch the block and feel if it vibrates, or be in dead silence and try to hear it. Or more simple, plug the pump in the CPU_FAN header and turn the PC on, if its dead the BIOS will display a message in the POST screen saying "CPU Fan error!"

Thanks for your response!

Ok I have the plugged the pump into the CPU_Fan header and it starts fine These are the readings I get in the BIOS

Pump into CPU_FAN -> Speed: ~4680
Fan into CHA_FAN -> Speed: ~2093

Pump into CHA_FAN -> Speed: ~4720
Fan into CPU_FAN -> Speed: ~2060

so looks like both are registering. I have taken off the block, applied more thermal compound, rotated it and reset. The pump is set securely on the CPU, no movement.

No difference in temps. While I type this email with nothing else running, I am see a temp of ~70 across all 4 cores. Max in last 30mins has been 100C, min 67C

As for the vibration, well its very hard to tell. I think there is a tiny vibration. Impossible to hear as the fan and intake fan dominate the noise emitted from the machine

Baffled!

Now I have noticed that one pipe is definitely hotter than the other. Does than signify anything? Should I put the intel stock cooler on for now and just get a new cooler

One pipe takes hot water from the block to the radiator to cool it and the other pipe take the cool water from the radiator to the block.
I think you should RMA the processor as it seems to have a manufacturing error with the IHS not transferring the heat from the die to the lid properly, because your CLC is working ok.

ok just to update. I have put on the stock Intel cooler, taken off the 120mm fan from the Corsair H60 and just used that as an exhaust fan. There is also space for a 92mm fan so i have put that on there too. Now Inwin, the case manufacturer suggest that only a 92mm (or water cooler) fan is used but can't see any harm in also adding a 120mm exhaust fan.

The temps are now reading ~39C and max of ~63C. So I guess its as you suggested earlier: the H60 pump is probably faulty?

Ok question now is, what aircooler will I buy?. Any thoughts: I was thinking about the Thermalright AXP-200R, but its a 140 fan, not sure if it will fit.

Or perhaps the Zalman CNPS8900 Quiet?

Also do you think the fan from the H60 is fine as a exhaust fan? Its not the quietest by any means!

Noctua fans are quite silent, you should those for intake/exhaust of the case.
Also, even if the max height supported for CPU heatsink is 130mm, that is BS because you can use tall coolers.
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14 65.0 CFM CPU Cooler ($71.74 @ OutletPC)
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-U12P SE2 54.4 CFM CPU Cooler ($49.99 @ NCIX US)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($24.99 @ Newegg)
CPU Cooler: Phanteks PH-TC14PE 78.1 CFM CPU Cooler ($74.99 @ Amazon)
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-L12 37.8 CFM CPU Cooler ($59.99 @ NCIX US)

great! thanks

The max depth is about 125mm from CPU to glass side panel (its an mITXcase) . I see NH-D14 & NH-U12P have a height of (with fan): 165 mm. I might be able to squeeze the Noctua NH-L12 in but not sure if the 140m,m fan will be clear of the RAM

I forgot to mention I have the Intel 1150 socket.

Nevermind, thought the mounting of the motherboard was horizontal. The NH-L12 should be your best bet being only 93 mm tall.
The only drawback is the room you have for overclocking, with that cooler I don't think it is a good idea.
-sighs- Your case is what is holding you back when it comes to have a good cooling for your system.

indeed, the inwin 901 is more style over performance, but definitely limited choice for cooling systems

Looking the Noctura the L12 or possibly the U9B SE2 may be the only choices. I think the issue will be the two ram sticks and if there is enough clearance.

Yeah, the Pro version of the Vengeance series have some ridiculously tall heatspreader (Nothing that a saw can't fix!)
The UB9 is good too, quite a small vertical cooler. The only thing that bugs me is that neither have a rated max TDP but I think it will setill perform far better than the stock intel cooler.
