My parents are paying $500/month for internet access through Verizon. We live in the middle of nowhere and cannot get cable/dsl. We tried Satellite but the upload speeds were painfully slow and download speed was little better than dial up. Verizon just expanded their 4G network into our range so we use our cell phones as access points to get internet through the cell towers. I had no idea they were paying that much. Surely for that much per month there must be an alternative. The problem with using Verizon is that there is a cap on data usage (that we always go over).

I was thinking about using a long range wifi broadcasting device - but isn't that just line of sight? We live on the other side of a hill...

You need to increase the minimum data. They charge like $15 per gig if you buy too small a plan. You can outright buy 60gig for about $450. Pretty much you really have to be careful what you are doing. If you are using only the cell phones and not using them to run PC or other devices off them some of the other vendors like sprint or tmobile offer unlimited plans. These of course have nowhere near the high speed network data coverage that verizon does.

Obviously you never want to run torrents on a connection like this. If you download large files I would try to find a public hotspot to do it rather than use the cell broadband. It also helps to load flash and ad blockers on your pc since it will cut the amount of traffic. You can also use the browser options to tell it to not preload photos and stuff.
