Games running choppy even with a good rig, any suggestions?

Hey everyone, I built my computer around 4 years ago and I feel that I'm in need of an upgrade after seeing how some of my games run, but I am not sure what I need to upgrade. I am also having some problems with games being choppy and I do not think it is a graphics problems but I figured I would ask you guys here. My current rig is

CPU : Intel Core i7 870 @ 2.93 GHz
GPU : Geforce GTX 660 2GB
Memory : 8 GB DDR3 2GB x 4 1333
Mother Board : Intel DH55TC
Resolution : 1920x1080
OS : Windows 7
Hard Drive : Seagate 240 GB SSD

I have upgraded all parts of my PC except the mother board and RAM and I believe that my RAM is too slow for today's gaming. The games I am trying to run are Assassins Creed 3, and Multiple Clients of an MMORPG called Perfect World International. My games are choppy as my characters move around in semi-crowded areas. If anyone can give suggestions as to what I can do to improve my rig or what I should buy it would be greatly appreciated.

You definitely run a good rig. No questioning that. Although you might need a replacement for that CPU/Motherboard in a few years.

The computer might be getting really hot, which would cause the components to underclock themselves to cat down on heat production, and that can make good components run slow. Clean your computer frequently, and make sure that no vents are blocked, and that you have no conflicting fans.
Have you checked for viruses? That can also cause unwanted slowness. If no viruses show up, use a utility called Process Explorer to find things. It makes Task Manager look like it's blind, and it will tell you if something's hogging resources. If Process Explorer finds something, consider uninstalling it.

It's time to say goodbye to that Bloomfield CPU and corresponding motherboard. At stock, an i7 4790K runs at 4.0 GHz. And, there's the new Haswell-E looming around the corner. Perhaps a memory upgrade is in order too. That 660 still has life in it, upgrading it is up to you.

Thank you all for the quick responses, to follow up with all your questions, I have ran a scan for viruses and nothing came up, I will try running prcoess explorer to see if I need to uninstall anything. As far as cleaning my actual PC, I do make sure to run it every couple months. I open up the PC and used compressed air to blow out all dusts on the fans, CPU fan, GPU fan. I do want to note that the SSD and GTX 660 are two parts that I added to my PC within the last 5 months and I am booting from my SSD. Another note I want to make is that my PC is getting extremely hot. When I run HW Monitor it tells me my cores and CPU are running at 99 degrees Celsius. What can I possibly do to lower the CPU and core temperatures?

Ok, Ok, I admit that Bloomfield is old, but a solid CPU/board combo is a solid one that should last him through 2015. Or at least until Haswell-E gets here.

Reapply the thermal paste between the CPU heatsink and the chip itself. Use Arctic Silver, and spread it evenly. If the problem persists, you might have to get a new CPU cooler, which would suck, seeing as though you're probably going to be replacing this all in about a year.

I reapplied the thermal paste as you suggested and I even cleaned out the PC. The temperature of the PC dropped about 12 degrees Celsius and is maintained at around 85 at load. The minimum value was 41 degrees, and the maximum being 91. Previously the minimum would be around 45 and the maximum at 99. Performance of PC slightly boosted, but the CPU still seems a bit hot. After reading around, people said that I should be at around 55 degrees at max, would I need to find a different CPU cooler?

If you buy the Coolermaster hyper evo 212 it will cool much better than the stock cooler and will also be compatible with any future motherboard/processor you might buy in the future. Last I saw them they were only $25 on newegg.

Your temperatures are crazily high though, unless the fan on your current cooler is faulty there is probably something else going on. Do you have any software on your PC that might be controlling your fans? What speed is the CPU fan rotating? (you can use the free software Speedfan to check or look in the BIOS) How is your case set up, do you have case fans giving good airflow?

My CPU fan is rotating at 2160 RPM, and I am using the stock cooler for the i7 870. I am using an Antec 300 case and the wiring is neatly organized on moved towards the front of the PC so that there should be alot of airflow for the CPU itself. I have one case fan thats is located in the back of the PC to blow out the hot air, maybe I might need a front fan to blow in cooler air? Currently my CPU temperature dropped to 75 Degrees Celsius. I am running a lot of games at once (multi clients of an MMO game) and so far its going really smooth after applying the thermal compound, but the CPU temperature is still a bit high. I was contemplating getting a liquid cooling system since I heard they work really well and I don't want to upgrade at the moment.

The fan speed is OK then, it's cranked up pretty high and probably makes a hell of a racket! Putting all your cables at the front may be blocking the intake of cool air for your case so a front fan combined with some minor cable redistribution might be of benefit. Check out this guide to fan placement http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/cooling-air-pressure-heatsink,review-32320-5.html.

The Hyper evo has comparable performance to a water cooled setup such as a H60 or maybe even a H80 with the added benefit of not having to worry about liquid leaking into your case and pump failure (which is much harder to see than the fan not turning on an air cooler)
