So, what comes after Devil's Canyon?

Hey everyone!
I am building a gaming PC and am facing a little dilemma here.
So I know that the Nvidia Maxwell series should be coming Q4 2014 or Q1 2015, and I plan on waiting for it's release. But what about Intel CPUs? Should I stick with an i5-4690k or wait for what comes after Devil's Canyon?

No, I'm not going to wait until Q4 of 2015 for a small improvement. But what do you guys think? Should I wait for the next release?

After Devil's Canyon it's Broadwell, the successor/die shrink to Haswell. Broadwell will effectively utilise the same micro-architecture as Haswell; however it will introduce new instruction sets and as mentioned, a die shrink to 14nm. We're currently at 22nm since Ivy Bridge/Haswell.

It's not worth waiting for Broadwell in my opinion, just purchase now. Skylake however will be an improvement, which is to be released towards the end of 2015 or beginning of 2016, after Broadwell. Skylake will be succeeded by Cannonlake; both Skylake and Cannonlake will require a new motherboard and socket however, hence current existing motherboard's won't be compatible. For the record the new socket will be 1151.

As mentioned however, I'd purchase what you desire now rather than waiting.

All the best. :)

Thank you for your very detailed answer.
And by the way, I would have picked you as the best answer but you answered after the others.
I will probably end up getting a Skylake CPU down the road when I feel the need to get something a little better.

Not a problem at all, it's my pleasure. Thank you for your response. :)

That's perfectly fine too, Skylake is still some time away so purchasing what you desire now would be ideal in my opinion. If you're satisfied with the performance of Haswell/Haswell-Refresh/Devil's Canyon, then you may even stick to it. Personally I'm on Ivy Bridge and don't plan on upgrading anytime soon, I'm pleased with it's performance.

Anyhow as mentioned, all the best with your upgrade! ;)

Hmm I would guess just yet another die shrink with marginal IPC improvements >5%. Not trying to hate but the "core i" architecture was perfected in ivy bridge. The architecture is spent and played out either because intel has nothing better to offer on the table or simply because there is no competition and no reason to push innovation in the desktop segment. Either way I would bet my first born that that intels next drop will be nothing more than a BS die shrink refresh like everything else. By the way I run intel now but the lack of fresh products is ABYSMAL.

Yeah, it's kind of sad that they aren't really innovating at all, just subtle improvements here and there.
