I have installed a secondary hard dive on my computer to put all my school files on what two things do I need to do now

Pay special attention to his Step 5. There he describes the two processes: Create a Partition and Format it. You should be aware that, in many more recent Windows, these two steps are combined into one operation called either Initialize the Drive or Create a New Simple Volume. Once the process is done you will NOT need to assign a drive letter. However, you should back out of Disk Management and reboot to allow Windows to adjust its Registry info.

A couple hints about Disk Management's display:
1. The are you need to examine is its LOWER RIGHT pane. That pane shows you all valid storage hardware (if your BIOS can detect the unit, it will be here), whereas other panes can show you only units that windows already can read and use.
2. That pane SCROLLS so you can see all your devices.
