Is my laptop fried?

So I bought a new Acer Aspire E 15 laptop about a month ago. It works good enough, but I didn't like the touchpad so I bought a mouse. I plug the mouse in and the computer clicks and turns black. There's now a burning smell coming from the USB and the computer won't turn off, so obviously something bad has happened. I'm trying to register my computer on Acer's website, but it won't accept my serial number. Also, most of their pages seem to be down as I only get 404 errors. I've tried a couple things to get my computer to turn on, such as taking out the battery and draining it, but nothing. No lights, it doesn't even try to turn on. So obviously plugging into that USB fried something. I'm wondering if there's anything I can do? And if it's even worth trying for warranty or will Acer say it was user damage and not help. I don't want a giant paperweight and can't afford to get a new machine or pay to really have this one fix either. Thanks.

Does the mouse still work or is it fried also? If you bought the laptop new and have the receipt, I would take it back to the retailer and attempt to return it there first. If they refuse, then call Acer (1-800-910-2237) and request a warranty return. There's obviously a short in the connector - there's no way plugging in a mouse (!) should void the warranty.
