I tried both type of DVD disks. I have Windows 8 and supposedly you do not need a separate program to burn. I also tried movie maker to no avail. I tried burning at different speeds. Tried multiple DVD players.
All of them state that there is no readable data. What am I doing wrong?

Solution
Windows 8 does not come with a DVD burner program (unlike Windows 7) that can burn DVD disks that will play video in DVD players. It will only burn DVD disks that contain the data (AVI Video files) which DVD players can't read on their own.

You will need a separate DVD Authoring program to create a DVD Video with... Making menus, etc.
If you want to pay money there's lots of options out there and many come bundled with video editing software.
As far as freeware options go, there aren't a lot.
DVD Styler and DVD Flick are both ones I've used. They're both fine for free.
