Hello,

I am fairly new to the community so I hope I do this right :D

Ive always been using my Intel Pentium G630 for gaming but the 2.7ghz clock and the 2 cores is a little bit of a bottle-neck when it comes to gaming. I have been looking at other threads but cant seem to find the right answer. I decided to set up my Intel core2quad Q6600 and overclock it to 3.0ghz but windows just wont boot past 2.7ghz (1199FSB), however I can get into the Bios fine and it says that it is clocked at 3.0ghz but when I try and boot it. I get the 'Starting Windows' then it reboots and so on.

*Just to let you know. It boots fine at 2.7ghz

I hope someone can help me with this :)

Specs:

OS: Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit
RAM: 6gb
Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
CPU: Intel core2quad Q6600 Socket 775
MB: MSI P35 PLATINUM

Could be an onboard safety feature preventing you from booting at a certain temp. Even though it boots fine at 2.7, that extra little bit could prove dangerous, thus starting an emergency shutoff. I recommend downloading core temp to monitor your cpu temps more effectively.

I don't know if this will help, but here is my experience with a Q6700.

My overclock kept crashing using a Scythe Ninja Plus cooler, which is a tower cooler. As soon as I switched to a down-draft cooler (Thermalright XP-120), no more crashes.

Turns out my motherboard, an Intel, had no cooling on the voltage regulator chips near the CPU. Few motherboards of the Q6600 generation have any vrm cooling or heatsinks. It is possible to have a cool CPU and overheat the voltage regulator modules.

Try using a downdraft cooler, and/or add some mosfet heatsinks: http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/enmofocomohe.html

Well not every chip is equal. Just because someone was able to OC the same CPU doesn't mean you'll be able to do the same.

I was looking through the BIOS versions on MSI's page. There are some BIOS revisions that improve/change CPU support. What version BIOS is your motherboard running?

Mmm, let's see.

[Start] > "dxdiag" (no quotes). If a window pops up about saving, just ignore. On the main tab, the BIOS version will be listed. For example:

I would not overclock a q6600 on an MSI 4-phase board..
but ..you should be able to undervolt and overclock more than that..
Have a fan blowing on the VRMs..directly..

Thanks, Would you be able to give me recommended voltages for the Q6600. The cooling shouldnt be an issue as I have 3 12v fans blowing on the mobo and both side covers off the case. Thats why the processor is of room temp when idle :p

Hello,

I few weeks ago, I gave up on the Core2Quad Q6600 because I got my Core2Duo E7500 on the same board up to 3.49ghz and was happy with that. From all of the other things I have to pay, I dont really have to spare cash to be buying a core i5 or i7 so I have to stick with my Intel Core2's at the moment.

I got my core2quad to 2.99ghz fine although now, Windows wont boot. I get the 'Start windows normally' screen then the screen goes black and reboots and it will do that over and over again. Anyone able to help with that?
