Can a graphics card degrade over time?

I have a Nvidia GT 540m and I noticed that games that used to run perfectly at high/medium settings (namely Portal 2) are now barely able to run on the lowest settings. Is there any way my gpu could have degraded over the past year? Thanks in advance for any answers.

most likely your system has become piled up with junk files and processes running in the background. Possible the graphics card cooler is full of dust, but not so likely after just 1 year.
Run openhardwaremonitor and check graphics temperatures and CPU usage when trying to play that game. This will tell you which issue it is.

If CPU processes, run MSCONFIG and switch off any uneeded apps which run at startup

Thanks for the quick response! I just reformatted my hard drive about a month ago so I don't think it has to do with my system, but I did check my gpu's temp and is was running around 140 F when I was running a game.
