How often are parts DOA?

A group of friends are all switching over to PC from console gaming and all of them asked me to build computers for them. I've only built 3 computers in my life. I planned on assembling the same computer for all of them because it would be easier but I don't want to run into problems with DOA parts.

All of them are okay with spending $800 with monitor and OS included which means the parts I choose won't be able to be top quality. I've put together a system and read reviews on all the parts.

How often do you get DOA parts? It seems like a lot of people on the forums have problems when building a pc. Neither of my 3 builds have had parts DOA or problems where it wouldn't POST or boot, but adding another 6 systems to that might be increasing the chance that I get parts DOA and I have to deal with returns.
