Hi guys, I'm actually in the process of RMA-ing my PSU because it's got this coil whine that is very annoying. It's been plugged in directly from the wall the whole time I had it. Do you guys think that it's a better idea to plug it in a surge protector?

More about : plug psu directly

It's almost always better to have some kind of fail-safe between your system and point-failure source. Power surges are a major threat to any computer system so yes it is better to use a good quality surge protector.

Do you think that my PSU started to have coil whine because it's been plugged in using the wall plug and not the surge protector?

That's a tough question that I can't answer. If you search for "PSU coil whine" on Google or in this forum, you'll get back half a million results. It's one of the most common PSU faults, even in high-quality PSUs but more so in lower quality units. Sometimes the whine is full time, sometimes intermittent, sometimes only when certain voltage draw levels are reached. It can be poor quality components, poor quality control, bad luck...

Basically, unless you repair PSUs for a living, it's not worth the time and effort to diagnose the cause - if it whines and is under warranty, then RMA it. If it's not under warranty, you can either live with it or replace it.
