m17x, 260m's in sli don't recognize monitor

I have an R1, it's got bios A07, Nvidia drivers 257.38. both the gpu's are present in nvidia control panel. if i put them into sli, they don't recognize the laptops monitor? is sli cable bad?

it runs games like COD4 quite well with them NOT in SLI, but then when IN SLI the FPS go way down and it's unplayable. and it has a notification in bottom right of desktop saying SLI can not find the monitor. when i go to control panel and try to "choose" native monitor there is no option too do so.
