So a friend of mine had this Dell Studio XPS 8100 which he gave to me when he couldn't stand that it freezes/crashes everytime he tried to play a specific game.

The performance is good (as long as it lasts) but after a while, like 3-4 minutes, audio freezes, screen goes black and then it shuts down.

I tried every fix Dell had on their website, I did run the Dell System Detect diagnose-tool and everything seems to be fine, It's out of warranty since long ago and I'm really frustrated.

Hardware seems to be working smoothly, it never does that except from when I try to play that one game. (I haven't tried any other games)

I tried switching Hard Drives, problem still persists. Switched PSU, reseat RAM, changed cables, still the same. I tried pretty much anything I can think of (I'm not good on tech stuff).

I really need some help here, at my stage I can't afford a new computer or whatsoever.

Thanks.

My specs:
Windows 7 Home Basic (x64)
Intel Core i5 650 3.20Ghz
6GB DDR3 RAM
500GB Hard Drive
Nvidia GeForce GT 220

Let me know if more info is required.

Welcome to Tom's Hardware Forums,
With a system that old, I will suggest the following things be done:
Both heatsinks (CPU and South Bridge) should have the thermal compound replaced, while doing that, look for swollen or leaky capacitors and or discolored/burnt mosfets on the board.
Monitor temps using CoreTemp or SpeedFan or similar program.
Replacing the CMOS battery probably wouldn't hurt either (or at least checking it is at 3v)

I finally figured out the problem. The guy that gave the computer to me could simply change his Graphics Card. It was some sort of damaged and wouldn't function well.

Graphic's some kind of sink wasn't properly attached on it. Plus it's fan was way to dusty. I repaired the thing after I replaced it. Haven't tested it yet to see if it works properly.
