Motherboard: Asus Z97-A
OS: Windows 8.1 64-bit
Adapter: Rosewill AC1200UBE2 Wireless USB Adapter

I have a new PC build (desktop) and have been trying to get a wireless USB adapter I just bought to install and function correctly, but every time I try to access the internet through the adapter (or just randomly with the adapter active) I get this error screen and have to restart. The error screen will pop up again upon startup repeatedly until I physically remove the wireless USB adapter from the USB port. I have updated every possible driver on the motherboard (USB drivers, etc.), made sure I am downloading the correct driver for the adapter itself (from Rosewill's website, which offers a Win 8.1 driver, as the installation disc only supports up through Win 8). However, whenever I try to actually use the adapter, either immediately, or some time after using it for a minute or so (I've been able to get a connection and browse the web briefly), I will get that same error screen: "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL rtwlanu.sys".

I cannot for the life of me figure out what I could be doing wrong. Although I typically just use an ethernet connection, I will be bring this computer with me to a place where I will not be able to use an ethernet cable, so being able to have wifi connection is a must. The Asus Z97-A motherboard does not include onboard wifi capability, which is why I purchased a wireless USB adapter instead. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Although this is my first post, I have long been a lurker here on tomshardware.com and found the many posts on pc-building infinitely helpful over the past several months.

Thank you again to any kind soul willing to lend me a hand!

Okay, I figured it out. I'm going to leave this up here in case anyone else runs into a similar problem. Do NOT download and install the utility program that comes with the adapter. It is not required to use the adapter and when I decided to simply plug the adapter in without the utility program installed, it seemed to work fine. Weird.
