(Ethernet?) port in my room looks different

The clip is to the side of the cable, instead of being on the bottom. Can't find anything about it anywhere. Please tell me what it is.

I just googled it, it is a 431a telephone plug. Is it possible to get internet from it? I don't know much about this kinda stuff.

change the plug to a rj 11 or get a adapter.
the cableing inside should be ok for internet.

I just unscrewed the plug to check it was alright, but 1 of the wires has come off, would it be ok to just solder it back on?

if there is no other way of putting it back on.
be carefull and quick so you do not melt the plug it is realy delicate.
or install a rj 11.
is it a punch down?
it might be best with a krone tool.

It is a punch down, but the plastic and conducting connector has widened, preventing the wire from being held in properly. I had to google what a punch down was. I really have no idea what I'm doing.

how many wires are there?
only 2 are needed for a telephone line.in a rj 11 it is the 2 midle it soud be the same were as well.
do you have a multimeter there?

I have a multimeter, there are 4 wires but 6 slots. There's a blue wire to slot 2, red to 3, white with yellow stripes to 4, and white with blue stripes to 5.

grab the multimeter and on pin 3 and 4 without shorting the leads you should get a voltage of 50 volts dc.dc not ac.

there is no phone working on this line it is just installed someehere in your room unused?
if this is the case and no phone is installed for years than there is no way you whould get a reading.
if the line is not conected to a provider no voltage.

I half expected it to blow up in my face, but it didn't, thankfully. I've lived here with my parents for about 12 years, and never used it. I only now need to use it for internet, because we're having some problems with our router downstairs, but that's a different story. What can I do about my plug?

because your level of knowledge is minimal i whould advise you to call a expert to see if he can trace the line and rerlace the line that goes downstairs with the line that goes in your room.
do not solder anything just tuck it back in and screw it in place.and if someone catches you just stand up and wistle.
