Hi,

I am dealing with a problem for the last couple of months and now i'm hoping one (or many) of you guys could help me solve this puzzle.

Here's the problem.

Whenever I start up my pc it's hanging with the message: "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key". This is a message we are all to familiar with. But here`s the catch: if i wait for, letst say, 10 minutes without pressing the any button, and then press a button, it will boot. But if i press a key right away it will show me the same message over and over, even tough it will eventually boot.

So its not a huge problem, more an annoying problem. Cause whenever the pc is up and running there are no problems what so ever, even rebooting isnt a problem.

So im hoping someone knows what this problem could be. I`m guessing something with my MB. Power Supply is tested, and also diiferent HD cables, and MB Ports. The same problem happens with an other HD.

Thanks in advantage and sorry for my "dutchy" English!

As it isn't the simpler answers I suggested, then sadly I believe it is HDD failing or a PSU issue. The problem seems to be not enough 'spin' up when the HDD is being accessed initially to provide "HEY! I am the boot drive, here is the OS". This is either A) not enough...
Do you have anything plugged into your USB ports? Or inserted in the CD/DVD drive? The system tries to boot off those first because of your BIOS BOOT ORDER. You should enter your BIOS (Del, F2, etc. see screen or read your manual) then change the 'boot' order to the HDD first that your OS is installed on.

I do have a external HD but I already tried to disconnect everything and my BIOS BOOT ORDER is correct. I'f got the feeling its an uncommen problem, cause i havent found anyone else (on the internet) with the same problem and/or solution, beside the fact i myself got a decent knowledge of computers.

I would suggest formatting your harddrive, reinstalling windows and updating your motherboard drivers first.
if that doesn't work try to check for the battery on your motherboard, you could try replacing it with a new one.

As it isn't the simpler answers I suggested, then sadly I believe it is HDD failing or a PSU issue. The problem seems to be not enough 'spin' up when the HDD is being accessed initially to provide "HEY! I am the boot drive, here is the OS". This is either A) not enough initial power to get it going (when you power on a surge of power is pushed on ALL components even ones that are 'not' plugged in, like the spare USB ports) that would be likely a PSU issue and need replacing or B) the spindles themselves are taking a long time to 'get up to speed' or 'warmed up' that makes it a faulty HDD.

The best test to determine this would be to simply plug the HDD into another computer as it's "Boot Drive" and see what happens. IF it occurs exactly the same way on a 2nd computer then the HDD is failing, if it works fine then the PSU is most likely failing.

Now as we have no clue what you use this computer for (high end gaming? just general use? etc.) or what the specs are on it (Download SPECCY and copy-paste the first tab of info here) it may NOT be feasible to replace the PSU / other hardware if the HDD is working. In fact considering the cost of a new HDD is around $79-129, it may not be cost efficient to replace it either (!?!?!) as a off the shelf general use PC is as low as $249 at Walmart.
