I have an old external Western Digital Elements drive (WD1000EB035-01) which seems to be very subtly corrupting my files.
I say subtly because if I put video/images/audio onto the drive, I can still seem to play them all back without issue.
The only way I can tell files are getting damaged is that if I put an archive onto it like a rar/zip file, if I go to extract the files from the archive I will get errors from winzip/7zip saying some of the files have CRC errors. I don't get any CRC errors copying said archives to/from the drive, only when trying to extract them after they've been on the drive.
Chkdsk finds nothing wrong and I tried reformatting as a hail mary with no success.
I'm at a loss here, does anyone know what the problem could be?
I've considered taking apart the USB enclosure to see if I could just remove the drive and use it as an internal drive to see if the problem persists, would that be worth trying? It's well beyond the warranty.
