So i am going to buy an SSD to put win 7 home basic and some programs like java but i don't know how much is enough?
Usually people told me to take 120,128 GB but my friend had only 34 and he had a lot of space left.
So how much to take?
And what kind to take the exposed one or the one in the box?
and what brands should i take?

Solution

My 120GB SSD has the OS and applications on it. No games.
Currently, ~61GB used space. A 60/64GB drive would not work.
Remember, you also have to leave about 15% free space to allow TRIM and wear leveling to do its thing. Leaving ~50GB actual usable space.

i wanted to add that i will have all so a 1tb hdd so i want to put there only the OS so the disk will get filled with junk and the it would take longer for him to boot

120GB or larger.

Any smaller, and you're not really getting the full benefit of having an SSD.
Put the OS AND your applications on it.

Yes, you can do it with a smaller drive and only the OS on it. But you use far more things than 'just the OS'.

You can do that.
By this question do you mean choosing mSata vs SATA SSD:
And what kind to take the exposed one or the one in the box?

Either is fine but only if you can connect them on the motherboard. Modern motherboards will likely have SATA ports.

Crucial MX100 or Samsung 840 EVO are good choices.

USADRet what "things" you mean? i am going to put some applications but i don't think that they need 120,128 GB
and Suztera i meant by that, that the "box" gives me the opportunity to mount the SSD to the case and not leave it dangling somewhere in the case unless the exposed kind has it too?

SATA SSD all have enclosures and screws so they can be place in a 2.5 tray. Or you can velcro it somewhere on the case.
