I am currently looking for a cooler, Asus branded laptop for web browsing, video and some light gaming.

There is a new laptop (450€) with the i3 4010u (1.7ghz, no turbo, Haswell) and a Nvidia 820m. The CPU is modest but capable of the sort of stuff I want to play on it, namely:

Team Fortress 2
Indie games like Among the Sleep, Minecraft, Viscera Cleanup Detail, Proteus, Outlast, etc (Unity games can be quite demanding because of poor optimization).
Old games in DOSBox and Win95.

I do have a gaming desktop and recently, a refurbished Asus with a i3 2365m (1.4ghz, no turbo, SandyBridge) and a 720m, for considerably cheaper (335€) became available. Since the 820m is practically the same as the 720m (bar boost clock reach), I'm wondering if the jump from the 2365m to the 4010u is worth it or will the cpu limit the 720m in any way (I do know what the 720/820m is capable of).

I feel when the 2365m becomes unusable, the 4010u won't fare much better either. Both laptops have 4GB of ram.

Can you help me?

PS: There is absolutely no way a ULV i3 like these can be overclocked with any utility, right?

Solution
I think if you can handle the very slight performance hit with the cheaper unit, go for it.

Although there are software solutions for overclocking, I will not recommend overclocking a laptop. The design of most laptops allows for the spec'd heat dissipation and not much (if any) more, there are no options for aftermarket cooling for laptops - IMO, not a good idea (unless looking to see how fast you can cook a computer)

Hi,

This should answer your questions regarding the differences between the 2365m and the 4010U (http://www.cpu-world.com/Compare/840/Intel_Core_i3_Mobile_i3-2365M_vs_Intel_Core_i3_Mobile_i3-4005U.html). It clearly outlines the 4010U as the best choice because the Haswell processor runs more efficiently and has a slight performance advantage over the 2365M. Also, the 4010U is more battery efficient, which equates to a longer battery life.
