Hey guys,

I've just bought a Corsair VS550 550W PSU and when the system is running I hear a strange low buzzing like sound coming out from the PSU.
I ruled out GPU and CPU by removing the connections. So is this normal or the PSU is faulty??

Solution

Yes, the solution is to return it... :) And maybe get a different brand that does not exhibit the issue.

Some PSUs suffer something called "Coil whine" that is not harmful, but annoying. SOme brands suffer it more than others.

There's like a thousand youtube vids proclaiming to demonstrate the problem. Fortunately I must be tone deaf in that particular frequency range. :)

Asa long time user of Corsair PSUs I have to say I am becoming more and more disappointed with their brand.

The AXi series is very good but ridiculously overpriced
The AX series was not as good as the HX
The HX series was excellent in the 650 - 850 watt range, not at 1000-1050
The TX V2 was a very good line
The RM series is highly variable depending on specific size.
The VX was pretty good .... don't know much about the VS
Anything beginning with a C I would pretty much avoid.

I'd call Corsair and tell them the noise is making you nervous. Noise from a PSU is never a good thing. Without the GFX card in lace, coil whine would not appear to be an issue but still....the way ti correct coil whine is to get a better PSU.
