As the title says

Ive gone through a few threads on building a desktop and dont know whether to get i5-4670k/4690k vs Xeon 1220 V3 as my CPU. My build is as follows:

Mobo: AsRock Z97 Fatality Killer X
CPU: Intel i5-4670K/4690K
Graphics: Sapphire Dual-X Radeon R9 270X/280x
RAM: Corsair Vengeance Black 16 GB (2 x 8 GB DDR3)
HDD: Seagate 2 TB HDD
SSD: 128 GB (used as boot drive)
Case: NZXT Phantom 410 White/Blue
PSU: Cooler Master G600W
Wifi Card

GPU will most likely become a 280x

Solution

You shouldn't need to over clock to play those...

i5-46xxk, Only get the i5-4690k if its not much more than the 70k.
Do not get the Xeon, The only xeon worth your time is the Xeon E3-1230 V3, Because it has HyperThreading, The Xeons you mentioned do not have hyperthreading and are not worth your time.

Yes but the Xeon is not hyperthreaded, Making it not good value for money.

I personally do not see hyperthreading as a value. It does actually not create two threads working at the same time, but a thread working after one. You can't override a hardware limitation with software implementation.

(This is why the Piledriver module system is way more effective).

You're better off with the Intel i5.

As stated earlier by Littlesackninja, the Xeon's you have selected are not the best in terms of performance per price, due to no hyper threading (HT). We recommend the Xeon E3-1230v3/E3-1231v3 due to their Hyper Threads, effectively performing the same as the Intel i7 range whilst more affordable than i7's.

The Xeon you have selected is equal in performance to the i5's, with that said you're better off with the i5. If you can stretch your budget a little, the Xeon E3-1230v3 or E3-1231v3 would be ideal as they feature hyper threading.

All the best. :)

The real advantage of the 4690k over the 4670k is the thermal performance and higher overclocks right ? there wont really be much of a performance difference ?

And I do apologize for being a newbie at all this, but are the K series chipsets already overclocked ? or would we need to manually overclock them. And if they are overclocked how much more of an fps improvement would there be over an i5-4690 or a Xeon E3-1230 V3

No the K series are not over clocked, If a cpu has a K on the end of it it usually means it has an unlocked multiplier, Allowing you to over clock it.
The difference in performance between the 4690k and 4670k is minuscule, You will not notice it in games at all. But if the price difference isn't much get the 4690k.

Ahhh okay I see, and therefore to overclock it you would need to do that manually, and how do you actually overclock the CPU. Still very new to all these things.

I play WoW, WoT, Dota 2 quite often, and will play new release games like the upcoming Far Cry 4, and other RTS/RPG/FPS games. what would you recommend for the setup roughly between 1000 - 1300 USD.

You shouldn't need to over clock to play those games at maax settings, Provided you have a decent gpu. Far cry 4 uses the same engine as far cry 3, Your computer should handle it, No overclocking required.
No, To over clock you NEED a K series cpu, If a cpu doesn't have a K on the end then it is 99.999999999% not overclockable.

Ahhh okay then, so what changes would you make to the build with a 1000 - 1200$ budget. Would you suggest to downgrade the CPU to maybe an i5-4460 ($200), i5-4670 (230) or an i5-4690 (245), both are non-K considering I wont need to overclock

to relight a smothered bomb the hell is getting a 4460 a better option ? i agree that the WD 2tb is miles better than a seagate
+ on the SSD
but the potential to have a 4690K over a 4460 iss immense the tim alone is well on the +$20 to get it, cooler temps, + oc ability (might never be used) but to have the option is priceless
