Quad Channel RAM, would it work with dual channel RAM?

Hey,
I'm building a new PC, I'll take the X79 AS Rock Mobo, it has 2x quad channel RAM sockets. Now if I'd take 2x RAM sticks (just for a small budget as a beginning and later upgrade) would this be OK? Can you later on get additional 3 pairs and would it work?

Solution
It should work but finding identical DIMMs several months apart to minimize the risk of running into some odd compatibility issues will become more difficult over time since memory manufacturers have new PCB revisions once or twice a year and the ICs that go on the DIMMs may also change depending on what is available on the market.

Ideally, you should buy at least in sets of four so you do not have to worry about fussing around to complete your existing pair.

Even if you buy a new DIMM that got released yesterday, you can still get different PCB revision and different DRAM ICs - sometimes even different manufacturers - over time. As long as the basic specs are theoretically at least not worse, they can change just about everything else while keeping the same model number.

While this is rarely a problem, it still increases the probability of unnecessary headaches.
