im making my first budget gaming build and was wondering if i can save a bit of money by using an old laptop HDD with w7 pre installed instead of buying a new HDD and w8.1, for now at least. will this cause me any problems or anything else i should watch out for doing this? thanks

Solution
nothing wrong with using a laptop drive, per se. but the Windows 7 will b useless...won't have teh right motherboard drivers, and will be registered to the old laptop. you'd have to do a clean wipe of th drive

i'd suggest just buying a new HDD, which would cost you about 35 euros for a 500gb, or 52 for a 1tb one.
getting a windows cd shouldn't be hard, there is enough on the internet to find a cracked one ( maybe even from a friend or something)
if you really want to get a legit version of windows, it's going to cost you some money.

It would be possible to use the laptop drive in your pc, but you're going to have to format it and get a new copy of windows anyways, so you might as well buy a new one and save yourself a lot of trouble.
