Worth having 4790k if not overclocking and 75C+ in temps undervolted CPU.

Hey guys,

I've had the 4790k for some time now but I noticed that the K series do not have the same features as its counterpart (is this true? what features does the K series lack) I opted for the 4790k not because I want to overclock but because it had a higher stable base clock so I need not worry about that and just because I got a decent deal on it. Should I trade it in for a 4790 would I notice any difference?"

My 4790k with artctic silver 5 with proper fan seating (stock intel HSF) cannot handle AIDA64 stability test with no floating point just regular test for more than 2 minutes before temperatures rise to 95C and CPU begins throttling, faulty chip? Case airflow is not too bad 2 intake fans and 2 exhaust fans. Would I have any luck to exchange this cpu?

Just buy an aftermarket cooler. Cooler Master 212 Evo will get it down to 50-60C depending on the ambient.

Yes, the Non K series do have few more features, but those are not something 99.99% of the people use. If you change to 4790K for a 4790, you will lose a but of performance.

well no wonder you have high temps, your using an intel stock cooler DO NOT use STOCK coolers for OCING!

Get a CM Hyper 212 Evo which is only $30.

Yes you are right that K SKUs do have missing technologies, but just one, it's intel vPro technology (only businesses really use this). No don't trade it in, the K sku will run faster.

Your "proper HSF seating" is probably not as proper as you think it is. When seated properly, Intel's stock paste performs just as good as nearly anything else on the market and by replacing it, you may have actually ruined the stock HSF since the stock paste's thickness (as in very high viscosity) likely plays a role in maintaining adequate contact pressure.

And yes, K-chips lose some of the virtualization and management features most other non-K models have.

@TechyInAZ Thank you for your response, however, I am not overclocking, matter of fact, I am undervolting the CPU just to get it to be at reasonable temperatures.

I don't want to huge block of metal like the Hyper 212 sticking out of my case so I'll look into getting a low profile intel like CPU HSF, however even for stock cooler these temps are pretty high, I would be 100% with 60c load

Non k cpu's have TSX, vPro, and VT-d enabled.

If you have it at stock no OC, be aware that if you have voltage set to adaptive it overvolts massively while doing benchmarks.

Did you remove the stock tim from the cooler before applying the as5?

@maxalge Absolutely, I removed the old stock tim with 50% IA, and applied AS5 and temperatures still skyrocket to 90c within 30 seconds, it idles lower though at around 28-32c compared to the 36-38 stock TIM.

If you want to be at 60C under full-load, you are going to need something much beefier than a 212+/EVO/X.

Since you said you have no space, you will likely have to live with 70-80C under full-load assuming you can find something decent that suits your case. The stock cooler should be able to manage 80C if it is installed properly and the case has adequate airflow.

@InvalidError Thanks for the reassurance, I will invest in an aftermarket cooler and experiment with underclocking/ undervolting as needed to bring down temps.

Are the extra features of non K models something that only servers/businesses utilize, will the average joe has any use for them?

CPU temperatures are grossly non-linear/inaccurate at the lower end of the range. Unless your room temperature is below 20C, 28C idle is impossible with the stock HSF, so take those low-temperature measurements with a truck of salt - they can often be off by 10+ degrees. The scaling becomes more linear after 40C.

Unless your "average user" is going to be running virtual machines, remotely manage the machine and other more enterprise-like stuff? Not really.

Are you sure that non k cpu's have those thing enabled?

Are you asking seriously? Because the website specifically says those functions ARE enabled on that cpu....

Nice necro btw...
