Hi I'm building my first rig but first I've got to say I love this site and it's community where I can get all the help I need from experienced people who are great and wanted to first thank u all for u previous help and for any extra help in advance, back to my dilemma I got a rig combo from new egg and I wanted it for gaming and wanted to know what is the best os at a reasonable/discounted price and antivirus that can protect me from the threats of being online or downloading and playing games. I also wanted to know if I should use Linux that comes with this combo at end of this post or windows and if It would or wouldn't be wise to play games from steam as well as download them from the website without av and possibly play some other online games. This rig is new so it has no previous os and also I heard that if u have a windows code from an old PC u can get a better price for windows, I primarily say this cause I have an old generic dell from about 8 years ago with the fancy code sticker on top and wanted to know if that could be of any use for getting a better price of an os.

All help is appreciated!!

Update: sorry I forgot the link for my rig

You could use AVG free for your AV program. Dell PC's come with an OEM version of Windows and most likely won't transfer to a new PC. You could get a new OEM version from someplace or purchase a full version of Windows. If you chose Linux or Windows that is totally up to you and what you plan on doing with the PC.

You can't use the OS from the old Dell for any type of upgrade on the new PC.

Win 7 or 8/8.1 will be around $85-$100.

For Windows, either Win 7 Home Premium, or Win 8.1.

For Linux...that takes considerable skill/experience to get games working. It is not plug an play like Windows.

Yes, SteamOS is a possibility. It is just a customized version of Debian, so for anything other than the games it supports, learn Linux.
And it does not support ALL Steam games.

If you're going to use SteamOS, thats all you need. It is its own operating system.
Don't need to download and install Mint, Windows, or anything else.

You can't do it from a bare PC. You need something to download it to, and then create a bootable USB or DVD.
