Hey there - not sure if this is more a CPU or laptop question, but here it goes. I've got a refurbished Asus Q501LA... it's a nice little laptop with a great screen, but it's a bit lacking under the hood. The CPU is an i5-4200U. I also happen to have an i7-3630QM socketed in a dead Lenovo laptop... I'm sure you know where I'm going with this.

Firstly, is there any chance swapping these two CPUs would even work in the first place, in terms of being detected? I can't find any information at all on the Q501, and there's no way Asus is going to answer this sort of question. Secondly, how badly would the cooling system be overwhelmed by such a processor that puts out so much more heat? I'm guessing this isn't the thing that can be fixed by slapping on some Noctua thermal paste and calling it a day.

Anyone ever tried this and/or pulled it off? I'm interested to hear if this is even worth my time to attempt... I'd rather not burn something out for no reason.

Thanks!

Solution
no, you have a ultrabook cpu so first off, it's going to be BGA so you would need to solder it off. 2nd, ultrabook cpus use only 17W max so a 45W cpu is impossible.

Sorry but your gona have to get another computer if you want more horsepower.

Looks like it... I hadn't actually taken the underside cover off, but I just took a screwdriver to it and it looks like it's soldered on there. I was looking at a picture on Anandtech, and it looked like there was a socket under there, but I guess I was wrong, and Intel's site backs that up now that I look at it. Stands to reason that the motherboard itself isnt built to deliver that kind of power, either. Oh well.

Not really in need of more power... I knew exactly what I was buying, and it was a good deal since it came refurbished from Asus. Guess I'm just thinking out loud here on the forums again. Thanks for the input.
