I was wondering if the AMD FX-6300 will bottleneck a r9 280. I'm planning on doing some light overclocking in the future.

More about : amd 6300 bottleneck 280

It won't bottlneck it , if it does it will be something very minimal you won't be able to notice a difference by using your naked eyes

Actually the 6300 will bottleneck most performance video cards when the game is CPU intensive, such as large online multiplier games but will still be playable. All other games that are GPU intensive or optimized for multicore cpu will not be bottlenecked. Even though you may hit a bottleneck, all games with still be playable with some tuning. Mantle for example off loads CPU data to the GPU to increase FPS in games that support Mantle.

Source: I have the 6300 and a 7870 card. I hit a CPU bottle neck in Heroes and Generals. The GPU usage never went over 30%. CPU core usage was 85%, 75%, 45%, etc per core. I overclocked to 4.4ghz and GPU useage went up to 60% and max FPS doubled. Although even at stock speed my FPS were a happy 60 FPS. Have fun!

How much do you think I can overclock the FX 6300 with the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO on an asus m5a99fx pro r2.0. Or should I just get an r9 270x instead since I will be playing games like Planetside 2 which is cpu intensive.

You can overlclock it a lot , the board is very good and the cooler is indeed great. Stick with the 280.

I also have the 212 evo. It can take you to 4.6 max. Maybe 4.7 if you get your cpu voltage low enough. Guaranteed to get at least 4.5. I was at 4.8 but I had to use low voltage to keep it from getting too hot but it wasn't 100% stable with the low voltage. The 6300 will go to 5ghz but you need water cooling. (or a bad ass air cooler)

Both video cards are great and will be happy with either but if you have a good deal on the 280 get it. Although I have heard some people having FPS issues with planetside 2 due the game being CPU intensive with so much stuff happening in battle. So just be aware if you run into FPS issues.
