Should I buy future-proof ram (DDR3 2133) if I'm not overclocking?

I have an older motherboard (MSI P55-GD65) and cpu (Intel i5 750 - Lynnfield).

My motherboard lists supported ram as: 2133*(OC)/ 2000*(OC) /1600*(OC)/ 1333/ 1066

I am looking to upgrade my RAM from 4gb of DDR3 1333 to 8gb of DDR3 _____ and I am wondering if I should go with the top supported speed of ram for my motherboard - DDR3 2133(OC)...even though I do not, and will not be, overclocking my system?

  • Will the DDR3 2133 just run at the maximum "non-OC" speed (1333)?
  • If so, is it bad/does it damage Motherboard/RAM/PC to run the RAM slower than it's rated for?
  • I'm considering this option, as I will most likely build a new system in the next year and could use this newly purchased RAM (which will only cost $10-20 more than the available DDR3 1333) in the new system, which will have a motherboard that supports higher RAM speeds by default (non-OC)...although, from the research I've done it seems like DDR3 1600 is the highest supported non-OC speed on most boards even nowadays.

I found these 2 forum posts on a similar topic, but they don't quite answer my questions so I was hoping for some help on this decision.

Any thoughts on my bolded questions, though, since I'll definitely be buying DDR3 for this current system?

No real point going above 1866 in most workloads, plus it's not going to be future proof given that your next board is probably going to be DDR4.

I'm going to pick this as the solution because you essentially answered the title question in regards to "future-proof"...but I've posted a new question here to hopefully get more detailed answers on the topic of if it's okay to use 'higher speed ram on slower motherboard default'.
