I'm getting a custom PC that has 8 gigs of RAM so i need a 64bit windows but i only have 32bit (Retail disk). Is it possible to upgrade to 64bit, and how?

If you have a legitimate license, you can download and burn a Windows disk from Microsoft's website. Links to the ISOs are in the below page. Be sure to select the appropriate version for your license.

I've personally never done that but it does make sense that it would work. Just make sure you have backed up your files etc. before attempting of course.
