Upgrading Current Gaming Rig

Hi,

I have an older gaming PC that I have updated the RAM on:
AMD 1090t 6core black 3.2ghz (air cooled)
ROG Crossfire IV mobo
16gb RAM (cant remember which - corsair 'adventurer' or something equally exciting)
XFX 1k power supply
1gb ddr5 GPU (Radeon 8580 or similar)

I was looking for a new monitor and came across 4k, and realise a new GPU is also needed (was looking at GTX770).

Question(s): Is a 4k monitor worth it for gaming (ignoring £$ for now).
Will the GTX770 work OK with my other setup (am at work, can get other spec later)?

For a single GPU(770 or any other) no, since you'll have to choose minimum settings in most games to remain over 30fps. You would be a lot better off getting a good quality 1440p or 1600p monitor, and spending your savings on getting a 780Ti or a 290X instead of a 770. But yes, the 770 would indeed work with your system.

The 1090t is about the same as a fx6300. If you want to eventually upgrade towards 4K, you'll need a ah heck cpu to help push along bigger graphics cards eg http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/powercolor-devil-13-dual-amd-r9-290x-review,3853-11.html

Your PSU should and ram be good. But I think you should look at upgrading cpu/mbo and graphics card to be able to head towards 4K.

If it's too big a jump now then just look for a half way point eg as Eduello says a gtx770. But with a good 1080p monitor eg Asus VE 248H

Right - so according to the blurb (http://www.geforce.co.uk/hardware/technology/4k/supported-gpus) the 770 will do it, but from what you are saying to even notice the extra UHD performance, I would need either 2 x 770 in parallel, or something much meatier (r9, titan, etc). Any top tips..? If it is worth it I can upgrade the GPU now and then get the new monitor next month..

I have the CPU running at a stable 3.82ghz x6 and can tweak it slightly to get up to 4.2ghz (but you start to notice the heat!).. I was hoping to put off the CPU upgrade until later ...

You'd need to go to at least i5 and if serious about 4K go for an i7. That'd run eg http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-r9-295x2-crossfire-performance,3808-4.html

But even though 4K monitors are now relatively cheap ($1000) the graphics cards sure aren't. Personally, I'm not interested in 4K mainly because of this issue. I'm happy to wait for next gen from nVidia and Radeon to see what's in store. If I were you, I'd go halfway - to 1440p.

i7 is def on my list of things to upgrade to, but of course that then means a new mobo & probably RAM too.. I might just bite the bullet now on a new GPU (r9 / Titan) and then upgrade the rest later... Maybe ask Father Xmas... ;)

Check the following link for an example, that is two 770s in SLI managing a framerate barely above 40fps in Battlefield 3. And that's with an overclocked 4960. And also, BF3 isn't even a latest game. For BF4 you would need to tone down the setting a bit, just for 30fps, and you would be slaughtered in a first-person shooter like BF by someone who is at standard 60fps even if you are a better player. With your current cpu and a single 770, you would manage, at best, a slide-show at 5 - 10 fps in even BF3.

Thank you very much P2 (& to all). I have jumped in without really understanding the ramifications. This calls for an upgrade!
