Why are 3.5" SSDs so much more expensive than 2.5" SSDs?

Usually smaller is more expensive, so I was surprised to see that the OCZ Colossus 2 Series 460GB 3.5" is more than double the cost of the Crucial M550 1TB 2.5". What's going on with solid state? And can I adapt a 2.5" drive to fit into a tower case made for a 3.5"? Thanks.

Most modern cases have spots for 2.5" SSDs.

SSDs are not limited by size - they often don't even take up the whole of the 2.5" case. More case just means more metal and machining to make the outer.

You'll probably find that the only 3.5" SSDs are very old ones, when they did actually need the space.

Thanks. Do you know how a 2.5" size SSD could be made to work in a tower then?

As I said, most modern desktop cases have slots for 2.5" drives. There are a number of ways the manufacturers do this. Often it's by adding extra holes to the mounting tray for standard 3.5" drives, though sometimes they also do things like put them on the back of the motherboard tray or have another drive cage below the standard 3.5" slots.
