Hi, I'm in the planning stages for a new gaming rig. It's been quite a while since I built a machine, and I think the state of the art for GPUs has advanced quite a bit. I'm looking to spend about $300-$350 on a GPU solution: I can go a bit higher if the performance is really substantial, but that's my preferred price point. I'm wondering if it's better to blow all of my budget on a single card (maybe the Radeon R9 280X), or to get 2 cheaper cards and run them in Crossfire/SLI mode? I've never run a dual GPU setup before, but I've seen some articles implying it can be a good solution. I'll probably be driving a single monitor at 1920x1200, and I'd like to run graphics settings as high as I can reasonably achieve given my budget.

Single GPU for sure... in your price range either the GTX 770 of r9 280x would be your best options.

I agree single card. In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 770 are marginally better than the AMD Radeon R9 280X.

The EVGA GeForce GTX 770 SC ACX is my favorite GTX 770 out of all the available models on the market right now.

Thanks for the quick replies! I'll take a closer look at the GTX 770 vs the R9 280X.

Choosing between Nvidia and ATI seems a bit arbitrary at this point; are there particular functions that one platform does better than the other, or is it just about raw performance between cards?
