Hello

I will buy a laptop with a 840m card (and an i7). I want to try a lot of games including the most recent ones.
My question is: is it a good idea to buy a laptop with a FullHD screen?

Kudos,
Albert

I'm assuming FHD = 1920x1080p so; I would try to go a bit higher up on the GPU tier list. A great 'budget' gaming laptop to purchase is the Lenovo Y510P which generally includes anything from an 840M to an 870M. I'm fairly certain you can go on Lenovo's website and customize one for yourself.

I said I will buy an 840m, I am well aware of the laptop market right now.
I'm fairly certain you didnt answer my question.

He did answer your question.

He is saying that the 840M will struggle with 1080p for games, especially the most recent ones and you should get something better than that.

The posted page above has benchmarks for the 840M.

No, it is not with that GPU. If you want to game on it, no, not a good idea. But if it's just for regular use, the integrated I7 GPU is good enough.

So, if you want to play the latest games in full HD, get a better GPU. If you insist on that specific gpu, then, go with a lower resolution.

It should be obvious that I WILL BUY A 840M. Mainly because I said it explicitly.
I have a budget. Everybody has a budget, I stated mine and you insist on going higher which at this price point almost doubles the price.

No, you didnt answer the question.

If you really insist on a gaming laptop then just be patient and save up more money or build a desktop on your own for much less. If you already have a decent desktop and want to game on the go, then just purchase a laptop with an 840M and stick with some lighter games.

Check your initial post again. You in fact, did not provide a budget. You only provided an intended purchase. You did not ever state a dollar amount. You stated your intended purchase and asked if a FHD screen was a good idea.

Both of us answered no, not with that video card. It should be obvious to you that we did answer this question, and should be obvious to you that you in fact, did not state a budget.

Yes, we did answer the question, don't be rude to people when you're asking for help.

Notebookcheck collates their notebook review benchmarks and categorizes them according to GPU. This includes both synthetic and actual game framerates. Here's their entry for the 840m. Look at the game framerates and that should give you some idea of what to expect.

I specified a VGA card and a processor. If you get better ones the budget will increase whatever that was.
Also its a bit unnerving that the first response is "Just spend 1,5 times the money on it" even though the topic was the display not the VGA card.

You are right, I was rude. Sorry for that and I'm thankful for the solution.

I spend a lot of time on notebookcheck. My problem is that the fps statistics usually go like this:
-1024x764 low
-720p med
-720p high
-1080p ultra
Do you see my problem? I dont have any information on the VGA card on 1080p and lower quality. Hence my question here :)

A quick newegg search provides only two laptops with an i7 and an 840M, one at $799 and one at $999. This makes your budget requirement vary pretty wildly, which makes suggestions for a laptop with a better video card not entirely unrealistic when you have a $200 swing.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=E...

If you don't want people to overshoot your budget, at least give the laptop you're planning on buying so we have an idea of how much you're willing to spend if you don't tell us outright.

Edit: They do that because you can generally extrapolate the performance between 720p high and 1080p high. If it performs low FPS at 720P high, it is highly unlikely it will perform well at 1080p low or medium. Driving almost twice as many pixels is more performance encumbering than turning up textures.

Dude you started your argument with asking about the key technical specification in the question and ended with financial advices. Who talked about gaming laptop? Who wanted advice with a desktop? Why did you even answer?

Sorry while I find a suitable link let me tell you: I'm a matematician so I am used to isolating the problem before solving it. I think that might have caused the argument here. I'm terribly sorry :D
