The Seagate Backup Plus Slim doesn't come with any software to password protect the contents from unauthorized access the was the Western Digital Passport Ultra does. Can anyone tell me if the software from my WD Passport Ultra can be copied over to the Seagate and used or will it recognize that it isn't a WD drive and not work?

Dunno until you try it, but you will be violating the terms of the license. So don't try it, is my advice.
I'm doing my research to decide which external hard drive I'm going to buy, and I came across this on WD's site:
"Back up to any external USB drive
With WD SmartWare Pro, you can back up your computer to any external hard drive whether that drive is from WD or from a third party."

So it should work okay, and not violate the terms of the license. I have no experience with it though.
