I am building a gaming pc for the first time in 5 years and need some help with the overclocking of my ram to be able to run at native speed and also have the CPU work in harmony with it.

Let me list the hardware for this build so you can get a clearer picture of what I am working with:

Chassis - Coolermaster cosmos II Black
Power supply - Corsair AX860 M
Motherboard - MSI Z97 gaming 5 (socket 1150)
CPU - Intel i7 4790K
CPU Cooler - Coolermaster seidon 240M
Ram - Corsair Dominator Platinum 16GB DDR3 DRAM - 2400Mhz
GPU - Gigabyte GTX780 OC Windforce

I know that the motherboard can run the memory at 2400Mhz when overclocked, what worries me is the fact that I do not know how to do the overclocking. I also want to make sure that my i7 4790k will run without problems as it only supports 1600Mhz at stock.

Please help me ant tell me how to overclock everything to work in harmony.

On the other hand, do you guys think it is a waste of money to go for the 2400Mhz memory. Should I rather go with the 1600Mhz - (will the gain from 1600Mhz to 2400Mhz be worth all the trouble and/or the money).

Thanks in advance

Check your manual, I believe the Gaming 5 has a sort of Auto OC/Tuning, can give it a try, I normally just go through the BIOS, with your CPU should be able to just set the multiplier to 40 and be good
For gaming, I would not pay extra for 2400mhz memory. You also dont need more than 8 gig. But, with modern boards, setting memory to run at its highest rated speed is easy. In the BIOS you will have an option to enable the XMS profile(s) your memory is capabale of supporting.
Whoops quick edit, that is XMP, not XMS thanks tradesman1
