XFire R9 270x or R9 290x?

So I've never done CrossFire before and I was curious if the specs of the two graphics cards are added together to find the final specs, or if it works differently. For instance, I have an R9 270x 4GB in my PC now, if I got a second one, it would seem that both of them together out-specs the R9 290x in most areas. So would it be better for me to just buy a second R9 270x or do a complete upgrade to an R9 290x?

Solution
Depends. You could add a second 270x and milk your machine for a bit longer, and possibly wait till the new GPUs come out and make a decision then. Depending on the setup/what program your using, you can get 1.2-1.7 performance boost with a duel GPU setup. The program has to be able to take advantage of SLI/Crossfire though.

I would usually say just upgrade to the best single GPU you can afford, but I would wait on upgrading due to the low price of the R9 270x and that the new GPUs are coming out, and may lower prices/add some interesting new features. Crossfire isn't perfect, but is a viable option, especially in instances such as this.

Ok cool. I just got the R9 270x and it works great for everything I do so I wouldn't CrossFire it unless some new games started coming out and I had serious FPS drop. But yes that's a good idea to crossfire once it starts getting slow then wait for the new GPUs. Thanks.

Yeah. I'm not buying any of the current high-end cards until I see the prices/specs of the new GPUs. I don't expect anything special, but you never know. Glad to have helped you on your question!
