Okay so I know this topic has been bashed to death already but I've spent countless hours to access this hard drive and read all the similar topics regarding this issue.

So, I have a mid 2011 iMac with 64bit windows on bootcamp. I also have 500gb western digital wd5000aaks external HDD which I cannot access.

I've tried accessing the hdd with windows' disc management and mac's disc utility. First my main goal was to save the files located in there. Well that didn't work out, then I decided its okay if I just let them be gone and format the whole hdd. Turns out its easier said than done.. On mac, I can see the HDD in disc utility and see that it has one partition which is hidden and greyed out. I tried to format the drive still and an error popped up telling me that it cannot be brought to seen, thus making it not possible to format.

Ookayyy, I've spent half a week trying to save the files and now that I decide i'll just delete them I'm unable to do that either!
After that I tried to format it thru Windows which was a complete failure, since the disc management didn't load the screen at all if the drive was hooked up. If the rive is plugged in while trying to do anything that has anything to do wight the specific drive, the explorer.exe just leaves hanging and does nothing. It doesn't "freeze" but its just hanging there doing nothing. When the drive is unplugged from the power source everything that i've tried to execute during the HDD being hooked up happenes the same second as the power leaves the HDD..

HOWEVER, if i plug the HDD to my ps3, it shows up and I'm able to view the content as nothing was wrong. So i guess its not the drive that's faulty because I can access it with ps3, and figured out it must be a driver issue. I then deleted all the drives that had something to do with the HDD and let Windows install them back. No help.

This confuses me and I've started to get grey hairs cause of that piece of crap drive and you guys are my last chance before I toss the damn thing to trash..

If any of you could provide information that leads to success i'd be very thankful! :)

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I also tried to format the drive with friends PC running windows vista 32bit. No help from the either.

Once you go SSD - you will never go back.....I utilize a 128GB SSD as OS drives in my builds and 1TB WD Black drive for data. Depending upon how many computers they have and the storage requirements, I usually recommend placing a single internal backup drive for all computers on their network - and syncback free backs it up for them. At home, I use a WD 2TB Black drive for backups. External drives are nice - but for critical data, I never use them.....especially since you can network the computers and transfer the data almost as quickly.

I knocked it over around christmas by accident but it didn't show any signs of damage back then. It died just over a week ago. I was on my mac in the evening and shut it down when I went to bed. The next morning i booted up it couldn't see the drive anymore.

It doesn't make any unusual noises but its a little bit noisier than my other HDD and warms up a bit more.
I think I isolated the problem to the HDD itself since the other HDD i plugged to the USB interface functioned properly.
