Help me out with making this build cheap yet have similar performance.

I'm in Canada so I need the Canada prices not US. :)  Thanks!

220 dollar less, same/better performance.
Probably can't save much more without going lower on performance.

Well, I don't mind you changing my items to better ones that are cheaper. :)

This will have the same performance but about $100 cheaper with equal quality components. I also went for a blue/black build.

The build posted by DoubleClick will have the same performance but with slightly lower quality parts. The PSU is still excellent, but it is lower efficiency and non-modular and the motherboard is also lower end. These aren't bad things and those would be the same components I would choose if I was trying to meet a budget. They are still very good components that will give you pretty much the same performance.

As for the options on the coolers, it depends on if you want to go for big air or AIO water cooling. Both have about the same performance but the AIO will give a neater look and is better if you plan on moving your case at all, as big air is heavy and puts a lot of strain on the motherboard. That being said, i've got the NH-D14 in my rig. I like that it's huge and I don't move my case at all. Also some of the AIO's are noisier than the D14.

I agree, but given that he the pc looks more like a gaming rig, I assume he won't overclock much further than 4.4ghz. 100-120$ z97 mobo's are still known to have no problems until it gets to 4.7-4.8 ghz. I'm for example getting my i7 4790k to 4.8ghz on a gigabyte z97x-sli, which was already further than I planned. Sure, I could probably go to 5.0ghz with my chip on a 250$ motherboard, but then I'd need a better cooler and would need to deal with a faster degrading chip (higher voltage).
The h100i offers a little better cooling than the noctua nh-d14, but is also pricier and a lot noisier. The h100i clearly wins if you're going for astethics, though. As for the strain on the motherboard, the d14 is what? 2 kg? It's mounted to the motherboard with 70kg pressure anyway, the h100i likes even a little more.

As for the psu, you're totally right. I meant to choose an other 550W XFX one, but couldn't find it. 750W is pretty overkill tho.

The more important changes were the i5 4690k opposed to the i5 4670k (probably stays cooler on the noctua than the 4670k on a h100i) and the GPU. Unless he intended to overclock his gpu manually, this yields some performance increase while also having better cooling.

Yeah definitely. I was trying to point out that he didn't need such high quality components, although some people want them regardless so I was also giving him the option.
