Hi All,
I recently built my system for the first time. After great difficulty I was successfully able to function my system. Other than this problem of sound.
Sound is not existent on my desktop. I don't have any sound card on it. Nor intend on installing. I just want to be able to hear to youtube when I connect my headphones to it.

Do I require additional speakers to it? All I can hear is the post (beep) sound at the start up.
I'm a novice in systems. So please bear with my stupid questions if any?
Thanks

HDMI is for monitor mounted speakers... that's not the card you should set as default for headphones. Check the device manager... if no yellow question or exclamation icons are on the Sound Video and Game Controllers, see what the installed sound card is named... that name or similar named sound device should be among the control panel sound devices and it's the one to set as default.
btw: there is a test button in the Control panel / Sound devices box... See if you get any sound out of it.

Playback tab / Sound device / Properties / Advanced / test

It's gigabyte mobo. I connected the hdmi cable to the monitor. Not sure if that had impact?
I installed all the drivers with the provided cd.

All motherboards have a sound card... so you do have one and you don't need to install any other

You do not require additional speakers... the system speaker or beeper only works with the BIOS, so that does not count.

What you need to do is install the sound card drivers which should have been installed from the Windows CD/DVD,
1. Check the Control Panel / Hardware and Sound / Sound / If the Sound devices are grayed out and inaccessible, you have to install sound drivers (Go to Num2)... If they are accessible you may need to Enable the correct sound device... right click and Set as Default... try this with each sound device in the list.. "Speakers" may be the default sound device but if it's already set as Default, try setting as defaul each of the following devices. If still no sound comes out of your headphones, You may need to enable Windows Automatic Updates... It happens that on some new Windows 7 installations, you have to first enable automatic updates and download-install the first few before the soundcard can start working.

2. If the Control Panel access to the sound devices is grayed out and inaccessible, Go to Start / Computer - right click / Select Manage / Device Manager / Sound Video and Game Controllers / You should read something like High Definition Audio Device.. Right click it / Properties / You should read "Device Status" / This device is working properly. If it says otherwise or nothing, you have to install the Device Drivers... Download them from the Motherboard product web page under the Support / drivers downloads.

I tried option 1 ) selected all of them step by step and tested it. Went through the gigabyte manual as well. and did as he suggested by making HDMI as the default device of communication. But still nothing happened.

I re installed the drivers but still nothing. Could I have done something wrong with installing the pins inappropriately or something?

Hi Chicano,
I have verified in device manager and below 2 are listed
1) Intel (R) Display Audio
2) Realtek High Definition Audio

These both are also listed under playback/ Sound (tab). I made both default and tested but no sound yet? I haven't played around with the default settings as well after installing windows 7 operating system. All I did after that was ran the gigabyte mobo dvd to install the drivers from gigabyte. Where else do you think I could have gone wrong?

Num 2 should be set as the default sound device... You haven't gone wrong, it's the way Windows 7 sometimes acts when newly installed.

1. Run the Sound Test as instructed before, and if you hear the test, you may have to tweak the default settings.. if you don't hear the test, check if your Automatic Windows Updates is disabled and enable it, and after the first 1 or 2 updats have instaled, the Sound will start working. If Automatic Windows Update is already enabled, you may have to wait for some more updates to download and install.

2. Right click on the speaker icon on the taskbar notification area, and click Volume Conrol Options / mark Headphones. This to have the headphone volume control on the notification area.

3. Have you tested the headphones on both front and rear audio connectors?

4. If you have only connected the headphones to the front panel, have you checked the front panel audio connection to the motherboard?

I see you're already in the process of being helped. But I may have some insight on this matter.

I dislike when Windows does this to me, but it's usually a driver issue in the end. A simple re-install of that specific driver or even an update of the driver and a restart will fix the issue.

Do you by chance know the model of your motherboard? I know you said Gigabyte was the manufacture, but that alone is very vague. If you could let me know what that model is, I can find the most updated driver for you and you can attempt an update of it.

Also, what Chicano said on options 3 and 4, that is if you even have a front input, you will most definitly want to see if that cord is attached to the motherboard. It should look like an old IDE connector, but smaller. The connector is either Blue, or Black and there should be a spot on your motherboard to plug it in, if it isn't already. Most of the time they are located near the additional USB pins which are usually located near the bottom middle to bottom left of the motherboard.

But like I said, if you could get me that model of your Gigabyte motherboard, I can assist you further.

It's not a driver issue.. I have experienced this one several times... the first time I tried installing the latest drivers repeated times and Windows said the most appropriate driver was already installed... I repeated this tenths of times so it was clearly not a drivers issue.

This problem brought me here and it's the reason I joined this forum three years ago looking for help but I ended having to install a PCI Sound Card.. I later found out the cause while searching for related information on a second Audio problem with another new install of Windows 7; Automatic Windows Updates was involved and I had not turned it on when installing Windows or right after... When I turned on Automatic Updates and the first download installed the sound card started working.

Good point about options 3 and 4 but all recent brand name computers and cases have audio and usb on the front panel... old computers from maybe up to mid 00 decade, did not have them, But the OP said: "I recently built my system for the first time"... so I'm 99.9% sure he has front panel audio connections.

Thanks for your response Chicano.

I will check my connections once again. and make sure if it front panel or rear panel connected. I wasn't aware there were 2 panels for audio connection until you guys noted it out. So, I'm pretty sure I must have messed it up.

nubbsauce and Chicano.

You guys were right on! I didn't connect the HD audio connector to the motherboard. The issue is partially solved.

However, Audio only comes through the speaker option that is when I connect my headphone to the front panel connector. system still won't play the audio when I set default as realtek or the intel hdmi as option. I tried reinstalling the drivers.

So at this point do I need a bunch of speakers to get the sound from the system or is it a waiting game for the windows update to do something?

I updated the driver option but it says I have the latest version.

You guys have been amazing help though

Some motherboards use different drivers for rear and front panel... I've seen rear audio use the Realtek driver and front the AC97 driver which should be included in the same download and install... but for some reason it seems your system has the front panel driver is installed and working, but not the rear driver.. Download the sound drivers from the Gigabyte driver downloads which should be the latest.

See if the driver download from the Gigabyte product support downloads makes any difference...

You don't need to install speakers, the audio should be enabled and ready to work with any type of speakers or headphones you connect.

You may need to change the Windows Automatic Updates settings. Go to Control Panel / System and Security / Windows Update / click Change Settings / Select an option / and select the Install updates automatically option / click OK and Restart the computer.. / and wait for the Updates to download and install, or click on the "Check for Updates" link.

Check and set the volume levels right clicking on the speaker icon on the notification area of the Taskbar.
Run the sound test from: Select speakers / click Configure / click test... you can also click on the L or R over the speaker icons to test Left or Right audio individually.

If after all this you still don't have rear audio, see if software help gets it done. Install SlimDrivers and run it to scan for outdated or missing drivers, select audio drivers from the restults if any updates are detected. After you're done updating drivers, uninstall SlimDrivers or configure it from the Tools menu to disable all of it's automatic functions. http://www.driverupdate.net/
