I'm at my wits end here now. I've recently upgraded to Windows 8.1 and I know when I had Windows 7 I had a lot of difficulty getting optical audio to work. Are they usually a pain in the ass to set up?

I've got 3 different sound sources now; Gigabyte motherboard on-board audio, ASUS XONAR DG and now a PCI express Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio sound card all with optical outputs and none of them work. I've tried two different optical players (receivers) and 3 different optical cables and not a peep out of any of them.

I did manage to get the ASUS working in windows 7, but since the upgrade it just hasn't worked and the drivers for windows 8.1 from their website are "beta" for windows 8.1

Please help, I'm losing my mind trying to figure out why this is so hard just to get some optical audio out?!
