So, I was building my own computer and I was wondering how much I should spend on a graphics card. I heard they were important for gaming.

I plan to be able to do all of the following, lag free:

-Play the Sims 3/4 with maybe 15 expansion packs.

-Play Minecraft with maybe 200 mods

-Play the "nextgen" games that are on PS4 and/or Xbox One, such as Assassin's Creed Unity.

On a side note, would 8GB of RAM also be enough? I plan to run a max of 3 games at once along with my web browser, and 2 - 5 other programs like Camtasia Studio, File Explorer, Notepad, GIMP etc

I heard $500 could get me a "high end" graphics card, which seems like enough to me. Any suggestions?

yes, 8gb of ram is enough, to suggest a good graphics card for you, I need you to answer these questions

1.How many monitors do you have
2.What res are they
3.Do you plan on adding more monitors in the future
4.Any colour schemes
5.Budget? I know you said $500 but what do YOU want to spend?

500 bucks gets you a R9 290 or crossfire 270X which beat the 290X

Chickenix this is the key. Wattage means nothing. Tell us the amps on 12v rail and what model it is. It may not be good enough to support a high end card.
