Hello,

First of all specs:

CPU - AMD FX 4130
Mobo - ASUS M5A97 R2.0
GPU - Radeon R9 280x
RAM - 4GB Corsair Dominator (cmp4gx3m2a1600c8)
PSU - 600w Corsair
HDD- 500GB Western Digital, 1TB Western Digital
SSD- 120GB Samsung V8

A few months ago my gf wanted to upgrade her PC so we got some parts; 4130 CPU, as well as a Gigabyte motherboard, GA-78LMT-S2P (which turned out to be incompatible with the CPU, silly me for not checking the full support list). Anyway, last week she got a new R9 280x graphics card and motherboard (ASUS M5A97 R2.0) along with an ssd and hdd. Initially we had some trouble with screen flickering and such issues but Windows Update solved those problems.

Tonight however when she was playing a few games her PC started to get a black screen, as though the DVI cable had been disconnected and any sound stopped coming from the speakers. This happened only with Metro: Last Light and Dota 2, she was playing Team Fortress 2 and Alice: Madness Returns with no issues for a few hours.

I have installed the latest drivers and I have tried the card in my PC (it runs fine). As well as stress testing both the CPU and GPU at the same time (using Prime95 and FurMark) for about half an hour, no problems. Temps are really good even under High load: GPU rarely goes above 60c and the CPU was maxing out at 75c, with stock cooler.

However when I was stress testing I noticed that the GPU wasn't being used 100%, in fact I think the max was about 65%. So I wondered if the PSU is underpowered, being only 500w. However I thought it would be fine as it is a good Corsair.

Any advice or suggestions are much appreciated.
Thanks for your time.

The psu you have is below the recommended wattage for a pc with that graphic card .
It might work well enough when its not under load and then have some heat issues when it is .
That would explain why graphically intensive games cause issues but older titles dont

But there could be other causes too .
What operating system are you using?

WIndows 7 64-bit. The GPU doesn't seem to have any heat issues, it never goes above 60c

I have an old 950w Powercool power supply. Going to test that with a multi meter to make sure its alright then try that.

Well, I tested the 950w with a multimeter and it was fine so I installed it into the rig where I then realised that the Corsair one in there is actually 600w and not 500w (again, silly me...). I tried the 950w anyway and still had the same problem. So now I really am stumped.

Edit: Tried a different monitor, same problem.

Edit2: Tested GPU in a different PC and got the same problem. Tried different GPU in this PC and no problems running Metro. Seems that I got a duff Graphics card.
