I had a completely new experience.

I installed a new R9 280 today.
I have a CORSAIR HX Series HX750 750W 80 PLUS GOLD PSU. (+12V@62A)
I was running an ATI 6870.

Previously I never heard the PSU. While checking out a game a fan ramped up and I thought it the
R9 280. I thought man that's loud. Through some experimentation I found the R9 280 fan noise was not the problem but the HX 750. I cannot tolerate too much noise from my computer so this PSU has to go.

I know the R9 280 draws more power then the 6870 so the PSU is doing it's job.

My question is: How many watt PSU would I need so it won't ramp up....or are there other considerations I need to focus on as well...besides the +12 rating and wattage.

Thanks for any help

Sounds like a heat issue inside the HX PSU. Have you cleaned it out lately? Might have to take it out of the case and really blow some air through it if it is really dirty. Also, check to make sure any modular connections are pushed firmly into the PSU: a loose connection will require more power from the psu when under load.

when you say checking out a game do you mean just looing at it or actually playing it?

you can change the PSU fan, find a few vids on youtube, but it will void the warranty. Better than replacing a working PSU.

A Radeon R9-280 - NEEDS 30 amps on the 12v rail and a 550w power supply and at least 2 - 6+2 PCIE power connections.

Your power supply is more than sufficient to run that card

You change the fan you void the warranty.

No I have not cleaned it out. I should. That's a good suggestion and I will try that tomorrow. Thanks!

I meant as in a browser or the steam store like the difference between idle and load.

While playing games. Far Cry 3 really makes it rev up and so does STALKER. Sleeping Dogs does too.

I took the PSU out and it was very clean inside. I have a power blower and nothing came out. The fan doesn't whine or rattle it just moves air. I think it's just going to be this way. Maybe I will start shopping

The HX supplies are suppose to be very quiet even Under a decent load.

The problem is solved. The PSU is bad. I took a 650 Corsair HX from my backup computer put it in my main computer started up Far Cry 3 and there is essentially no noise now coming from the PSU.

Thanks to most posters for their advice, help and time.

Glad you got it fixed. Have you contacted Corsair about warranty replacement? They have really good customer service.
