Hey guys, I recently got my new rig and decided to switch from the Radeon HD 8990 Dual GPU to two NVIDIA Geforce GTX 780 cards on an SLI setup. I'm planning on overclocking them but I'll only done this once before and it was with EVGA (which can't be downloaded right now as far as I know.) and was wondering what the best setting for this would be. Now, I know I could boot up Heaven Benchmark and just tamper with it until something crashes or I see artifacts, which I probably will end up doing but I'd just like a bit of input first. Also, my computer has advanced liquid cooling (high ass end version with a copper plated radiator and all), so I figured it wouldn't be as big of a worry with the temps.

Anyway, to any of you guys with experience OC'ing these wonderful cards, what's a good goal for my core and memory clocks, as well as the voltage? I already have an idea of what temps I need to be at.

Also, what's the best overclocking software out at the moment? As I said, EVGA is down.

well if you watercooling then maybe 1.5/2ghz +/- if its good since you have two cards you might need more radiators.

Most use MSI Afterburner

As for clocks, the Windforce is 1020 at stock, so that's a start

After that, try the 780ti Windforce clock of 1080, and then 10 MHz jumps after that

I'm just REALLY cautious when it comes to overclocking as I know many have completely f'd their cards to the point of oblivion and do not want to be in the same boat as them. I know a lot of 780's come overclocked from the factory, so does that capability apply to any of the GTX 780 series or is it just a series to series thing?

I'm only asking because that's around a 160Mhz jump right off the bat and that's a bit much, but if you're positive its safe I'll go for it and if I see any benchmarking errors I'll lower it right away. Also, any recommended voltage settings?

yeah the 780 does lots of cards are factory overclocked you need a super good cooling to get high overclock you have 2 cards that probably output around 400-500w of heat which means you need probably a 360mm rad with a 120mm rad to cool them effectively or a 420mm rad and then 2x240mm rad for some really good overclocks.

I'm not looking to go overboard, just a nice little boost. So far 1020 is running fine, I'm tempted to stop at 1080 because as I said I have no intent of maxing my cards out completely because I'd like them to last a while because I don't have another couple thousand to spend.

Really, just depends where you want to go. If you're satisfied, just leave it.

120x120x38, 12Vdc, 8" is my cooling setup.

ok probably could go to 1200mhz easy without a major temp spike. after that the temps/life may get lower you could always increase fan speed, pump speed, etc to keep them cooler if you want a higher overclock.

I've settled in nicely at 1180Mhz and that's more than enough of an increase for me. Thanks guys, Heaven is still running just fine and even a little better than before. I'm pulling roughly 50FPS average on Metro Last Light at 2580 x 1600 with everything maxed out except super sampling which I have on 2x.. I was getting maybe 42 before. I play on 1980 x 1200 for stability reasons but that's a pretty nice bonus, good enough for me anyway.

Now if I only had two NVIDIA GTX Titan Z 12GB's SLI'd together with one of the i7 extreme six core processors.. I have no interest in 32GB's of RAM because it's overkill. But if I had that setup, I'd be putting over 80 frames on 2580, maybe 50ish on the 3D settings.

no the new x99 mobo, 8 core cpu's, and ddr4 ram is out this fall so just wait and sell this bad boy its still a capable rig.

Is that new RAM compatible with most PCI mobo's? I have zero interest in selling my new rig, I just got it. Hah.

no its completley new. Just sell the ram, cpu, mobo and then your done. then get 8gb or 16gb of ddr4 ram,a 5930k/5960x and x99 mobo from asus. You might need a new waterblock on your cpu but thats easy.

I'll probably avoid doing all that until I really need it. I've done a lot of gaming just for benchmark purposes on this new rig and it's doing very well. So I feel like I'd probably up my RAM to 32GB's before I go balls out on a new motherboard.

thats good 16gb ram probably will dip in price by like 100$ when ddr4 hits a affordable price or will spike up by a 100$ like ddr2 did when ddr3 came out. ddr3 16gb used to be like 80$ then i dont know.

Why did DDR2 fly through the roof like that? Compatibility issues?

i have no idea all i heard is that ram price for that old ram spiked i think because they had so much ddr3 ram being manufactured and ddr2 stopped being manufactured

Wow. I'd hardly consider old RAM more valuable just because it's 'vintage' hah.

I'll definitely be taking a rain check on that DDR4 for at least a year or two, if I need more RAM I'll go for the cheap route of upgrading to 32GB's instead of swapping out the whole mobo. I also see ZERO need (at least for me personally) for an eight core processor of that kind of power unless you're rendering professional videos 24/7 on several monitors whilst gaming and watching youtube videos.

true but it would be a real beast i dont know im not really in a rendering proffesion but i might just try to render something for fun.

The Haswell's are only currently rated at about maybe a 5% performance increase tops, low overclocking support at sky high premiums and as of right now DDR4 is pretty much pointless. I just did like two hours worth of research, I'll definitely be passing these up for a few years.

i definatly know what you mean but i might get a build this fall so i might aswell get ddr4. haswell does suck in comparison to other generations performance increase.
