Yes the title is provocative.

So I have a $900 budget and have made two builds that im debating between.

An Intel build that has An i3-4130, 1866 RAM, and the cheapest z97 mobo I could find for future upgrade.

Intel- http://pcpartpicker.com/p/M9q6pg

An AMD build that really has no support from me since theres no real positives like with the intel
but is still a choice.

AMD- http://pcpartpicker.com/p/VvMjBm

So I'm pretty sure im going to go with the Intel since it performs just as good as the 6300 if not better w/ single threaded task and can be upgraded and OC'd in future (with better PSU ofc). So what are your thoughts?

Solution
you can go for a slightly cheaper monitor with same size and make room for a z97 and an i5

the latest games reqires a little more than 2 cores.. the i3's dual core may help now, but for future titles a CPU with more cores will be outperforming the i3, so the fx 6300 (high overclocking capacity) build will be future proof. I suggest the AMD build .. and also use an ASUS m5a97 r2.0 board... better performance board

Can I make a third suggestion? Take your Intel build, drop from the i3 to the Anniversary Edition Pentium, grab a cooler with the money you save and overclock right away.

You'll get similar performance right away (see this article which compares the G3258 with an I3 - http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/pentium-g3258-b81-cheap-overclocking,3888-3.html)
Then, when you do want to upgrade your processor, you've already got the cooler, so it's a smaller investment. Plus, you're only chucking or selling on a cheap $70 processor, rather than a more expensive ~$115 one.

Also, that's a perfectly capable PSU you've got there and safe to OC with your current hardware. You wouldn't want to add a second GPU, but OCing with your current build is safe.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/Vkv8bv Here, changed cpu and added a water cooler for the overclocking. (overclocking is VERY easy to do, you just have to find the sweet spot that is stable and performs good). I'm not sure if you're able to spend some extra money for it. (Btw if you can still replace fans on the H100i I recommend the corsair SP120 fans).

Pretty much the route I took when I did my build a few weeks ago. Got the pentium k and the z series motherboard. Got a decent gpu but will probably upgrade to broadwell and 800 series.

I'm not sure if he would be happy with an i5, a G3258 is more than enough for his build. I could put that ram and monitor on the build I posted and get him a better GPU.
