I got this message. I have read all the fixes, but none addresses when the computer gets stuck in this state and cannot do anything even after I turn it off.

What can I do to get to that point that allows me to do all recommended fixes?

Solution
I've had the same problem with the reverting changes for 2months now. Every 3 days my laptop force updates, fails, reverts, gets stuck trying to revert. After turning on and off the laptop a bunch of times in a row it slows down the reboot enabling me the right amount of time to hit the shift/F11 key and have it actually let me reset my computer. Then 5hrs later I am back up and running for about 2days 3 if I'm lucky then the force update starts all over. I have tried everything I have found on the internet in the past 2months. I'm sick of it and am most likely going to just start upgrading my linux desktop and say F windows on the laptop and put a new OS on there as well. All I used my laptop for was my steam games and now its not...

Does it ever completely revert back? Id try repair start up in the advanced options menu. To get to the advanced options menu hit F11 repeatedly upon start up of your computer. Navigate to troubleshoot>start up repair. or if you have the windows disk you can boot with the disk and it should take you to the Advanced start up menu.

When this happened on my partners laptop it took 3 hours to revert the changes and then it was ok. I was then able to install the updates fine.

Maybe leave it overnight and see if it's managed to sort itself out by morning?

What if you turned it off and turned it back on? It's been stuck on the same screen since 8:00 yesterday

The solution for this is refresh you pc by holding the F8 key while turn the pc on.
After that , choose the option to refresh your pc.

I tried your fix, but had no change in the results. I have a desktop with Intel processor and Windows 7 Professional. Then I went into the settings for Windows Update, and changed the option to letting me select the downloads BEFORE downloading them. The first time I shut down (I assume because that was the operating "session" during which I changed the download option) I had the same old problem, but then I shut down again, and it did NOT try to download any updates, and it booted just fine without any error messages. Then I went BACK into Windows Update and changed the option back to "automatically update". This produced a window in which I was given an "Update Now" button. I clicked on that, they downloaded without a hitch, I was instructed to restart the system, which I did, and the system booted the next time without any difficulty. Now everything seems to be working perfectly. Thus, this was a very simple fix and I doubt that it took over five minutes.

All I used my laptop for was my steam games and now its not even worth installing steam then my games just to have to redo it a few days later. I got so mad last month I went out and bought a ps3 so that I could play the new COD:AW when it was released and not have to worry about loosing my early access because my laptop wouldn't turn on. (I'm glad I did too, 'cuz sure enough Nov 3rd my laptop forced updated itself yet again (and tonight as well).

I contacted MS customer support as well as my laptop manufacturer and they both told me the same bs that I've read on the net and tried already. I truly believe windows 8 is the worst OS they have ever made. Id rather use Windows 98 with dialup at this point, it'd take me the same amount of time to do anything as its taking me now after having to reinstall windows every few days.

---For anybody having this issue just turn on and off your laptop enough times til it's a bit slow when turning back on and then do the shift/F11 trick and you'll get out of the loop. For what to do from there, well you are on your own because MS doesn't wanna fix this bs.

--Also you can pull out your CMOS battery as well as your ram then put it all back in if your stuck in the loop and can't get it to stop.

Hi all,

I recently had this problem when reinstalling windows 8 from scratch (windows 8 not 8.1). Had about 105 updates or so that were installing at the same time.

On the first restart, it said that it was "reverting changes" and it did this about two times but obviously with so many updates it took absolutely ages to do the whole loop.

In the end I got frustrated and just left it overnight... this morning? I wake up and it's all installed and windows update wants me to do another 15-20 updates so it looks like it worked.

Leave your computer overnight doing that loop and see what it does?

I followed the advice to turn laptop on and off a few times then pressed shift and f11 and managed to get out of the loop. Currently refreshing laptop....again (damn you Acer) and will update a few at a time.

Mine's been running for 4 hours now like that, and I'm going to check it again tomorrow. If I have to turn this off, then I'm just going to boot from my Win 7 DVD, format, install, and call it good.

My PC was doing this for a couple weeks (Dell XPS 420). It was trying to do 172 updates and i just let it go until it finished reverting (like 3 hours).
My solution that worked was this:
1. check for updates
2. uncheck them all
3. update 10 or so at a time
4. restart after each bunch even if it isn't required.
Good luck to you all

restart your system and then select safe mode and leave it for about 5-10minutes.....your computer will be taking few minutes for reverting back in safe mode also but do not panic it takes less than 5mins...and once your system opens in safe mode then restart it and you will get back to normal mode without any start up issues......

I think what you're seeing in this thread is that this symptom has many causes and thus has a variety of solutions depending upon what the original problem was.

I'd suggest working through the suggested solutions in this thread starting with the least aggressive (just leave it overnight and see) to the most aggressive solution (completely reinstall Windows)

Good luck with this annoying problem. Once my partner's laptop was left overnight I installed the updates in groups of no more than 5, only installing similar updates at the same time and the problem has not yet recurred

I fixed the problem for Windows 7 by restarting the computer in "Safe Mode with Command Prompts."
This should give you a back screen with "Safe Mode" written in each corner.
Then I opened the "Task Manager" by clicking Ctrl+Alt+Delete.
Under the tab of processes I closed the "Update" process and then restarted the computer.
Ta-Da....

If you are having problems updating your system or upgrading the OS, the problem may be your video card.

I removed my 2GB add-in video card, reset the computer back to factory default, reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled Windows 7 Professional 64bit. Then I upgraded to Windows 8. It did not fail and then it installed the updates to the OS automatically. I believe that Windows 8 has a problem with video cards having 2GB of video memory <<--- That is what mine has. Once all the updates are installed, I proceeded to install Windows 8.1. Once again... NO PROBLEMS. Windows 7 recognized the video card, but Windows 8 did not. Winodws 8.1 also recognizes the video card.

Interestingly, I have two hard drives. One with Windows installed on it and one with LINUX on the second one. LINUX recognized the video card first install. Windows 8 did not. I have 3 monitors connected to the computer. Windows recognizes all 3 monitors, Linux only recognizes 2 of them. I am sure the version of Linux I am running will eventually resolve the problem. 2 monitors is great, 3 monitors is excellent.

I also had the problem and none of the MS fixes worked.
I followed the MS Support direction to boot in a clean state, shutting all non-MS services and also some MS services that don't mater.
Assuming that there are some updates that have to go in order, that there are updates that won't be identified until prior updates are loaded (a common thing with MS update) and that MS hasn't sorted it out I did the following.
I selected the updated in groups by their number starting with the lowest. e.g. first I did all the 27XXXXX and 28XXXXX updates, then all the 290XXXX and 291XXXX updates so there were only 5-8 updates at a time, rebooting after each set. Sometimes you get the configuring failure, but this is usually just one or two of the 5-8 and will install the next cycle. Eventually I got to the latest, 302XXXX updates and then there were no new updates found. It does take time, but we can engineer to cover MS's lack of engineering.
Remeber to put the services and startup back to normal.

Hi all,
I had this same problem last night...very frustrating.
I left my laptop (Toshiba satellite A-300) to loop.
After 4 loops it finally resolved itself.
My advice...leave your pc/laptop and it should hopefully sort itself out.
Best of luck

The reverting process usually takes 15 to 30 minutes. You have to wait that long. Afterwards turn your computer on and follow the fixes given here - http://www.pcappspot.com/failure-configuring-windows-updates-fixed/

I have been looking for a good solution to this problem every day for a week and THIS is the first one that has worked. BRAVO to you!!! I had a suspicion that might be the answer, but didn't follow up on it until your post. Thanks for your help.

Had the same problem with Failed to Install Windows Updates. Found a solution: Go into control panel, system and security, windows update, change settings to manually update. install about 30 updates, cancel the rest, reboot, go into control panel again, install 30 more, and repeat, until all the updates are installed. done
