Difference between intel core 2 duo and dual core?

The Core 2 duo is a dual core CPU essentially. The Pentium D has 2 cores on 2 dies as does the Athlon64x2, these are known as MCP or MCM( Multi Chip Modules. The Pentium Dual Core is based on the Core 2 architecture but does not perform as well. The Intel Core architecture was superior to any other desktop processors at that time.

EDIT: Athlon 64x2 is atcually 2 cores on one die..

all my dears,
both dual core and core 2 duo have 2 processors on a single chip.
the only difference is that the core 2 duo is latest version of dual core and have a little high speed in performing the operations.
that why manufactures change the name in order to show some difference between previous dual core and core 2 duo.

OR
you can think o that dual core is Pentium 1 while core 2 duo is Pentium 2 .
